71st Highlands, 23 mm officer’s gilt 1855-56

71st Highlanders 23mm officer’s gilt button with the  backmark ENGAGED BEST QUALITY.  A good example of the button worn from 1855 until 1881 when the regiment became the 1st Bn. The Highland Light Infantry (City of Glasgow Regt.) However the smaller size of this button suggests it was one of  those worn on the double breasted tunic worn for just the first two years after it  replaced the coastee. The design shows the regimental number within a light infantry bugle beneath a Victorian crown. The regiment’s 2nd Bn. was the previous 74th Foot. sep2/2
