73rd Bengal Native Infantry. two very rare daguerrotype portraits of Indian officers of the regiment, circa 1856-8

The two extremely rare daguerrotype portraits by Baker  have added  colouring and both are oddly printed in reverse, most noticeable in the one of the officer with the 74 on his cap but in both cases their medals appear to be worn on the right. These two portraits, once united in a leather case but now parted, came to us with other memorabilia from the family of the commanding officer of the 73rd, Colonel George Moyle Sherer [later Major General KCIE] who had just received the promotion of a brevet of Colonel when he assumed command just before the Mutiny broke out. These will have been two of the loyal Indian officers who helped him in dealing with unrest in the ranks. Accounts of his command appear in Kaye & Malleson vols 3.4, & 6 and there are further details in another of our entries under the name Sherer . Further research may be able to establish the names of these two figures. aug25/3
