97th Regt of Foot, Earl of Ulster’s. Officer’s gilt coatee button, 15mm

An attractive 15mm officer’s gilt button of the 97th Earl of Ulster’s Regt. This is the pattern worn on the officer’s coatee between 1826 and 1855 [see Squire plate 25, 6]. The Irish button carries the regiment’s title on a garter around the number XCVII beneath a crown and surrounded by a wreath of shamrock, thistles, and roses. This example is in excellent condition with virtually full original gilt finish and the backmark is JENNENS & Co. LONDON. After 1881 the regiment became The 2nd Bn. The Queen’s Own Royal West Kent Regt, .      may14/1
