A fine documentary carte de visite portrait of H H Shivraji Rao Holkar of Indore


A very good carte de visite on red lined card but with no photgrapher’s credit showing the handsome young Shivraji Rao seated, holding a sword. Interestingly this cdv is inscribed in a contemporary hand on the verso This Photo of H.H. Shivraji Rao Holkar, First Prince of Indore – is presented to – H.H. Sawai Madhao Singhji Maharaja of Jeypore This day the 18th of April 1882 by ….[illegible signature]. The two Indian Princes were very close contemporaries. Shivaji Rao Holkar was born in 1859 and ruled from 1883 to 1903. His friend the Maharaja of Jaipur [then usually written as Jeypore] was born in 1861 and ruled from 1880 to 1922. The card is of standard cdv size 4 x 2.5ins.  1
