A young officer of the 74th Highlanders photographed at Gibraltar

£45.00

A good carte de visite by G DAUTEZ, Photographer to H. R. H. The Duke of EDINBURGH, & & GIBRALTAR showing the young officer in the stable dress uniform of the 74th Regt of Foot, which became the 2nd Battalion Highland Light Infantry after the 1881 army reforms. He wears tartan trews and peaked cap with regimental badge, adopting a casual pose leading against a piece of furniture with his legs crossed and holding his basket hilted sword by the pommel. The verso identifies the officer in later pencil as  Alfred but is mistaken in the rest of the attribution/ This is  Alfred William James Gow-Steuart who was commissioned into the regiment 30th October 1867 and is the only Alfred in the regiment at the time. By 1870 the 74th was stationed in Gibraltar attached to the 42nd Black Watch and by 1873 they had moved on to Malta in the same capacity.  sep18/2

See the group photograph sep18/1 for a fuller discussion of the attribution.
