ALWAR. Maharaja Mangal Singh Prabaher with his suite, late 19th century.

A very good full plate group photograph of the Maharaja and his suite, 11 x 8 ins, itself in very good condition but on a fragile old card album leaf. There are a very few small insect holes but none affects any of the figures in the group. The image is identified in a contemporary hand H.H. The Maharajah of Alwar & Suite. The Maharaja was born in 1859 and ruled from 1874 to 1892. The British officer seated next to him is presumably the Resident of the 17 gun salute state in Rajasthan. jul10/1

Despite the card having not survived well for over 125 years the photographs retain the fine, rich toning the best 19th century artists achieved. Although there are no photographer’s credits this and others from this group are similar to the work of Deen Dayal. Our own photographs are taken in natural light and we never use any later enhancement.
