An East India Company Surgeon’s commission of 1823 signed by General Sir Edward Paget

£175.00

The Commission is printed as usual on a large folded sheet of paper with manuscript insertions appointing George Lambe Esquire, Surgeon in the Service of the United Company of Merchants trading to the East Indies. It is signed E. Paget to the left of General The Hon. Sir Edward Paget’s personal wax seal. His distinctive signature is a result of his losing his right arm in the Peninsula advancing on Oporto. jan13/4

Senior Surgeon George Lamb served in the Company’s Bengal Army, beginning his career in the 14th Bengal Native Infantry and rising to the top of the Medical Department in the 1840s as Inspector General of Hospitals and eventually Physician General & First Member of the Bengal Medical Board [1849].
