An European man in court dress and wig

A rather unusually sized card, 10 x 6¾ ins, by Bourne & Shepherd, Simla, Caalcutta & Bombay  showing a full length studio portrait of a young man in court dress with a wig. The costume has an 18th century look and this may be a costume for some dramatic performance. Fancy dress and theatricals played a large part in the social life of the British in India, especially in the hill stations, such as Simla, during the hot weather season. The size of this card is odd, falling beween the normal cabinet card and the considerably large royal portrait size.    feb10/2
