An unusual silk sash with later gilt bullion adornments

£65.00

An unusual 19th century watered moiré silk sash with later gilt bullion and fringe, the main section 60 ins in length and the two lower fringed sections each 11 ins, all 5½ ins wide. The cerise red sash with yellow edges is rather reminiscent of the ribbon of the Empress of India medal given on the occasion of the 1877 Imperial Assemblage in India. However we suspect this sash has a theatrical, Ruritanian origin. A textile specialist who looked at this thought the gilt decorations were of Indian origin.  One of our photographs shows an 1877 medal against it.    jun12/1
