Anglo-Russian rivalries over Afghanistan and the northern frontiers of India

Thorburn, S. S. Bengal Civil Service: Asiatic Neighbours. with two maps. William Blackwood & Sons [Edinburgh] 1894 1st edition 8vo.

Large folding map of part of Central Asia (some tears along folds, without loss), folding map coloured in outline of Country south of Peshawar between India’s actual and political N-W Frontier, xvii.315pp, 32pp ads. Original red cloth gilt, rather bumped, faded, and worn, with evidence of removal of a label from upper board, but perfectly sound, internally clean, old ownership inscription to half title. An interesting and scarce work from the Russophobic camp. Thorburn, a Punjab administrator, writes about the independent tribes on the borders, Afghanistan, Russian Central Asian expansion, British policy, etc. feb3/2
