Balmoral. Tableaux vivants. Four examples on an old album leaf. circa 1890s

£90.00

Balmoral tableaux vivants were an entertaining feature of royal life at Balmoral Castle. Only one of the four photographs, the larger ones around 8 x 6 ins, has the central figure identified. This is a daughter of Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh. It is probably one of his three elder daughters, Princess Marie [later Queen of Romania], Princesses Victoria and Alexandra who both married German Princes. The three were born between 1875 & 1878. The characters in the other tableaux are not identified but they could include members of the royal family, courtiers or servants. Although not credited these are probably photographed by one of Queen Victoria’s Balmoral photographers, Robert Milne of Aboyne or his successor George Washington Wilson    jul4/1
