BAVARIA. Prince Luitpold Karl Joseph Wilhelm Ludwig [1821-1912] was the Regent and  de facto ruler of Bavaria from 1886 to 1812 as a result of the incapacity  of his two nephew Kings. The photograph has a visible size of 19 x 12 mm and over the frame it is 24 x 17mm.  This portrait of the Regent shows him in later age, three quarter length, wearing uniform, signed in ink Luitpold P. Regent von Bayern and still in a contemporary handsome wooden frame. Part of the old framer’s label on the back show it to be by H. DEVONALD, St John’s Wood, London. The Prince had a distinguished military career after joining the Artillery in 1835. he commanded a division during the Austro=Prussian War and was Inspector General of the Army during the Franco Prussian War. He took over many royal duties during the long absences of the eccentric King Ludwig II.
