The Quarterly Army List, of Her Majesty’s British and The Honorable Company’s Forces on the Bengal Establishment, exhibiting the rank, standing, and various services of every Officer in the Army, distinguishing those who have received Medals and other Distinctions, and who have been wounded, and in what action; with their periods of services, and dates of commissions. [ii title page & explanations], vii, 294pp, 28pp Civil List, ii Index to Civili List.  The British Regiments present are: 3rd, 9th, & 14th Light Dragoons, 10th, 18th, 22nd, 24th, 29th, 32nd, 53rd, 61st, 70th, 75th, 80th, 87th, 96th, & 98th Regts. of Foot. Late 20th century half leather, original rear printed paper cover bound in, no previous ownership marking, a good, clean copy. These lists are particularly useful in showing both the Company’s regiments and the British regiments serving in Bengal at the time and giving some details of the war services of individual officers – information not included in the East India Register.  jun23/1

 Her Majesty’s British Forces on the Bengal Establishment, vi, 358pp Her Majesty’s Indian Forces on the Bengal Establishment, [i Appointments since going to press], 52pp List of Civil Servants in the Presidency of Fort William, iv Index to Civil list, [xx advertisements]. Late 20th Century half red leather gilt, very clean text block with no annotation noticed. A very important and useful edition produced just under a year after treaty ending the Mutiny was signed.As well as the corps the British Regiments still stationed in Bengal were: 2nd, 6th,7th Dragoon Guards, 7th Lt. Dgns,, 3rd, 5th, 6th,7th, 8th, 13th, 19th, 20th, 23rd, 24th, 27th, 34th, 35th, 37th, 38th, 42nd, 43rd, 46th, 48th, 51st, 52nd, 53rd, 54th, 60th, 67th, 70th, 71st, 73rd, 77th, 79th, 80th,81st, 82nd, 87th, 88th, 90th, 93rd, 94th, 97th, 98th regiments of Foot. Although in many cases the regiments had only one battalion serving the exhaustive list shows the strain the recent events had put on the Amy. As well as including H.M. Army this volume also has considerably more detail that is to found in the 1859 East India Register and Army List particularly in the disposition of the Bengal Army, details of the Irregular forces, gradation and retired lists including Madras  & Bombay officers, officers’ war services, &c. Some of the additional information might seem slight but the detail can be very helpful. For example: in the case of a regiment that particularly interests me, the 73rd Native Infantry, the East India List does not show this regiment as having mutinied but this list notes that 2 of its companies did mutiny in Dacca.   may28/4
