A very good carte de visite by BOURNE & SHEPHERD, Photographers, INDIA showing a full length, seated portrait of H. H. Shahjehan Begum of Bhopal who ruled the large Muslim state from 1868 to 1901. This portrait of pensive and perhaps sad looking ruler probably dates from the latter years of her reign. Bhopal was ruled, most unusually, by four female figures over most of the 19th century and until 1926, the only female ruler in India ruling in her own right. jul26/2
