BRABOURNE, A 1939 dinner invitation given just a week before his death in office as Governor of Bengal

The invitation, on white card, 6 x 4½ ins., is from H. E. The Governor & The Lady Brabourne inviting Lieut. Colonel & Mrs Sundius-Smith to Dinner at 8 o’clock on Wednesday 15th February 1939. The card is headed by an imperial crown above BENGAL in gilt. Lord Brabounrne was to die in office just a week later. jul14/1

Sir Michael Herbert Rudolf Knatchbull, 6th Baron Brabourne, G.C.S.I., G.C.I.E., M.C. [1895-1939] had previously been Govrenor of Bombay 1933-37, and for a brief period was Acting Governor General of India. His son, John Ulric, the 7th Baron, married Lady Patricia Mountbatten, elder daughtxer of Earl Mountbatten of Burma.
