The carte de visite, by George Shaw, Bruntsfield Links, Edinburgh, shows a bust length oval portrait of the general in uniform wearing his Indian Mutiny medal and the IGS 1854 with clasp for Bhootan. He was born in Perth in 1829 joined the Bengal army in 1848, In the Mutiny he served in the Sylhet Light Infantry when it was being commanded by Lieutenant [later Major General] Joseph Ford Sherer in fierce actions against mutineers [see elsewhere on the website for photographs of him]. Buist later served in the Bhootan campaign. Buist’s medals were sold at DNW in London in 2021. aug12/1
