Central India Horse, a named officer’s side cap, circa 1902/3

CENTRAL INDIA HORSE. A handsome side cap which can be dated to 1902/3/4. The cap, in the regiment ‘s facing colour [ described in the Army List as maroon ], is in generally very good condition with gold wire detailing. The gilt metal badge measures approximately 45 x 45mm. 2 x 2 ins and much lAeger than most side cap badges. The badge has the late Victorian/early Edwardian imperial crown above the regimental cypher on crossed lances. There are two matching buttons to the front. The Pall Mall military outfitters name on the interior is split across the cloth but luckily the owner’s name tape has survived, reading G. P. Lieutenant Grosvenor Percy Hood [1882-1904] was a grandson of the 3rd Viscount Hood and his older brother Lieutenant Alexander Nelson Hood  also served in the Central India Horse but was killed in action in South Africa in 1902. Grosvenor was first commissioned in the Border Regiment in 1901, transferring to the CIH. He drowned at Agar in Central India in April 1904.
