CLINTON, Baron. The crest of Trefusis, 26mm silver plated

£8.00

A good example of the livery button showing one of the family crests of the Barons of Clinton, a gryphon beneath a baron’s coronet for Trefusis. The 26mm silver plated button has the backmark FIRMIN & SONS LD. 108 ST MARTINS LANE LONDON . A little of the underlying copper is bleeding through the highest points of the design. This probably dates from the period of the 20th Baron [Charles Henry Rolle] who succeeded in 1871. He served as Lt Col of the Royal North Devon Hussars and also as a Captain in the 25th Aberdeenshire Rifle Volunteer Corps. His son also commanded the Hussars during WW1 and succeeded in 1904 but on his death in the 1950s the barony became dormant.  feb12/1
