Coldstream Guards, George IV period officer’s flat gilt button, 25mm

A very handsome example of the officer’s flat button as worn in the 1820s. The 25mm button has the design of the star sunk with the garter engraved with the motto HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE.The button retains 95% of full gilt with just a little rubbing to the high points of the areas between the arms of the central cross. The backmark is R BUSHBY, St MARTINS LANE, LONDON.                       may23/7

Parkyn: Shoulder Belt Plates and Buttons [Gale & Polden 1956] describes this button as being worn by officers from about 1820 but he does not illustrate it. Bushby is recorded as making buttons 1806-1824.
