Duke of Wellington’s Regiment 76th Regiment. A silver plated bottle coaster.
£35.00
A pleasingly simple bottle coaster with a Duke of Wellington’s (West Riding) Regiment connections. The 4½ ins [11 cm] silver plaated bottle coaster has a beaded rim and a central engraved regimental badge, below which is the inscription PRESENTED BY LADY LANDON IN MEMORY OF MAJOR-GENERAL SIR FREDERICK LANDON K.C.M.G., C.B., (LATE 76TH REGT.). Above the badge is engraved H.Q. THE DUKE OF WELLINGTON’S REGIMENT. It is in very good condition and has a small maker’s mark which we have been unable to read clearly. Although we have described this as a bottle coaster it is equally happy accommodating a magnum [shown in a picture. Maj.-Gen. Landon joined the 76th in 1879, served in the Benin expedition and later served with distinction in the Royal Army Service Corps. jun3/2
Provenance: After the amalgamation of the regiment to form the Yorkshire Regiment in 2006 a large quantitry of officer’s mess silver and other regimental decorative items was disposed of, particularly by territorial battalions. We bought quite a quantity subsequently and other items of silver and a few prints and paintings are still available on the website.
