East India College. Antique leather bbok board with the arms of the college in gilt.

£80.00

An antique book board stamped the arms of the East India College in gilt, 8½ x 5½ ins / 21.5 x 14 cm, A bove the arms is a scroll reading EAST INDIA COLLEGE and beneath is a scroll with the motto of the Company AUSPICIO REGIS ET SENATUS ANGLIAE [By Right of the King and Senate of England].  This was the rear board of a book and has marbled paper on the reverse. It came from a damaged odd volume from a set and would look good framed. I have a few which have been cut to the size of a coaster and show one of these [not for sale] in one of the illustrations. This decoration was sometimes used on prize books awarded by the College which we have seen from about 1820 to 1845, usually using this green leather but sometimes black or purple.  Another illustration shows one of my coasters  with two others showing the arms of ALL SOULS COLLEGE OXFORD . We have several folio boiards with these arms which are for sale.   sep17/1
