East India Company staff officer’s button

£22.00

A somewhat mysterious button from the East India Company period. The 16mm officer’s gilt button has the backmark DAWES & SHERLOCK [a London maker located in King Street, Covent Garden] and has the simple design of a Victorian crown within a scalloped border. One of our illustrations shows an example of this button on an old staff officer’s uniform where it holds the single shoulder cord in place. That example is Ranken & Co. Calcutta although the other buttons remaining on the tunic conform to an example in this category with end reference oct8/1 .    nov27/2
