ELLENBOROUGH. The baron’s crest beneath a coronet, 28mm silver plated

£12.00

A  silver plated livery button of rather flat profile with the backmark JENNENS & Co. LONDON showing the crest of a cock chained round the neck beneath a baron’s coronet.  The style of the button suggests 3rd quarter of the 19th century and probably dating from the era of Colonel Charles Edward Law, 3rd Baron [1820-1890] on whom the barony devolved following the death of his uncle, the 1st Earl, who had been Governor General of India in the 1840s. There is bleeding of the underlying copper to raised parts of the design. feb12/2
