Ettington Park, Warwickshire, a late Victorian cdv side view of the HIgh Victorian house, now a luxury hotel

Ettington Hall, Stratford on Avon, Warwickshire. A very good late Victorian carte de visite side view of the large High Victorian house in Gothic style, now a luxury hotel. A complete re-modelling of an earlier building, this dates from 1858-62. Although Pevsner notes that it is widely regarded as the most impressive house in the county he fails to illustrate in his county guide. The cdv, by Wm. Savage, Winchester is described in a contemporary hand on the verso as Ettington , the seat of E. P. Shirley Esq. Side view. Although there are numerous images on the internet showing the house in colour today we have only seen a few earlier images and none of this card. Cartes de visite were primarily designed for portraits and ones of houses are few and far between.   feb15/3
