Governor General’s Body Guard, fine gilt officer’s 22mm button

The button has the bold design of the East India Company’s crest of a lion holding a crown within a laurel wreath, its leaves polished to contrast wih the rest of the design. This example, in fine condition, is 22mm and has the backmark GIBSON & Co, CALCUTTA . The design is the same as the one shown in Ashok Nath: Izzat [page 16 C1.1.16] although the one shown there has no rim. [For comparative purposes I show a photograph of my own rimless example in my private collection].  Also the  button offered here has a considerably lower profile which, with the style of the back, suggests a rather earlier date. jul26/1 SOLD 27th July 2025
