Governor Lord Pentland’s 8th Tour in Madras, 1918
Twentieth Tour of H. E. The Right Hon. The Lord Pentland, P.C., G.C.S.I., G.C.I.E., Governor of Madras. CALICUT, VELLORE, BELLARY, ANANTAPUR, HOSUR, BANGALORE AND KOLLEGAL. August 8th to September 4th, 1918. Printed by Supt. Govt Press [Madras] 1919. small 8vo [7 x 4¾ ins].
132pp. Original printed stiff card covers with cloth spine, a very clean copy. The party consisted of H.E., Mr T. E. More, C.I.E., I.C.S. Private Secretary. Captain W.S.E. Money Commandant of His Excellency’s Bodyguard, and Captain L.M. Peet, A.D.C. This was a considerably longer tour than most and there is a 14 page detailed timetable including names of some of the people who met the Governor. 43 pages devoted to Calicut and 26 to Vellore, both very important recruiting areas for the Madras Army. The now hugely important city of Bangalore merits only 2 pages by contrast. A rare survival of this tour in Northern Madras. mar7/2
