Haileybury College, 21mm mounted gilt button of the East India College from the Company period.
£75.00
The handsome and highly unusual mounted gilt button of 21mm diameter shows the East India College’s crest above initials H C C and has the backmark JENNENS & Co. LONDON. The crest used by Haileybury above their coat of arms differs a little from that of the East India Company itself in that the lion rampant holds s scroll, indicating scholarship, rather than the usual small crown and wears what is described as an Eastern crown rather than the traditional royal crown. One imagines that the second C stands for cadets but I have not seen conclusinve proof of that. The construction of the button is of officer’s quality. jul30/3
