The bust length portrait,engraved by Francis Hall after a painting by Eddis and published by George Virtue, London measures 14¼ x 10½ ins. overall, the uneven right hand edge suggesting it has been taken from a book. It is titled Major General The Right Honble. Sir Henry Hardinge K.G.B. M.P. . Henry Hardinge [1785-1856] is shown wearing his numerous honours earned during the Napoleonic Wars and probably dates from the 1830s before his promotion in 1841. He was Governor General of India 1844-48. Serving as 2 i/c to SirHugh Gough against the Sikhs in the Sutlej campaign he was advanced to the peerage as First Viscount Hardinge of Lucknow. may23/1
