HYDERABAD CONTINGENT LANCERS. An Edwardian officer’s silver fronted cross belt pouch, 1905

A fine and handsome pouch of an officer of the Hyderabad Contingent Lancers, the silver flap fully hallmarked Birmingham 1905 J & Co [Joseph Jennens & Co.] and mounted with the gilt monogram badge HCL on crossed lances, beneath an Imperial Crown. The leather pouch itself, of black leather with gold wire decoration, is in good condition and the silver mounts and belt loops are also hallmarked but with the date letter for 1904. The Contingent’s cavalry was designated as lancers in 1890. The cavalry of the Hyderabad Contingent had a long and very distinguished history, remaining loyal during the Mutiny. It was later to become the 29th Deccan Horse.   aug23/3
