POA

A 9 x 7¼ ins bifolium dated St. Petersburg Dec 12 1857 regarding the collection of money made there to support the British Army in dealing with mutiny of much of the Bengal Army. There was obvious support from Britain itself and its Empire but this is a rare example of financial aid from another country. Signed Wodehouse  it is from the British Minister Plenipotentiary to the Court of St. Petersburg [John Wodehouse, 1826-1902, 3rd Baron Wodehouse and later 1st Earl of Kimberley] noting that he was tarnsmiting £328 raised by the British community there and a personal gift of £50 [around £7,000 in today’s terms]. dec24/1. SOLD 27th De\cember 2205
