The three quarter length portrait shows the officer in mess dress and is on a cabinet card of Hills & Saunders, York Town [10.5 x 16.5cm] and is identified on the front in pencil “Herbert H-S”.. Herbert Arthur Herbert-Stepney was commissioned in 1898. At the beginning of the 1914-18 War he was a Major and second in command of the 1st Battalion Scots Guards. He was killed in action on 7th November 1914 in the first battle of Ypres when he was commanding the battalion. The battalion had thus lost all its field officers and command devolved on Captain Norman Orr-Ewing. feb6/3
