JOLLIFFE. An early 19th century bookplate for the Joiliffe family. Sir William Jolliffe, MP [1800 – 1876] was created 1st Baron Hylton in the 19th century when his arms bore this Joiliffe arms in the 1st and 4th quarters. The bookplate, 93 x 60 mm shows the arms in an oval with the crest of a a hand in armour holding w scimitar. The addition of a crescent in the arms, takewn with the scimitar shaped sword suggest some miklitary involvment in the east. Jolliffe himself was a captain in the 15th Dragoons and took part in the infamous Peterloo Massacre of 1819.      feb10/6
