King James II. An engraved portrait by George Vertue [1684-1756]

£65.00

King James II. An 11½ x 7¾ ins. visible decorative engraving by George Vertue in a 19th century black and gilt frame. It is titled on the lower margin Drawn & Engraved by Geo. Vertue from an Originial Painting down for Seacretary Pepys and painted from the Life by Sr. Godfrey Kneller Ano. Dni. 1688. The King, who was deposed in the Glorious Revolution, is not shown with the usual Royal crown but a Papal crown and crossed keys seem to float above him in a cloud referring to his catholicism. I do not really understand the full significance of the broken crossed anchors beneath the king unless they represent naval failure.  jan16/2
