LAWRENCE. Sir John Lawrence, Viceroy of India 1864 – 1869. A cdv

A carte de visite portrait by Howard Bourne & Shepherd, Photographer,    India showing the Viceroy bust length. Howard joined with Bourne & Shepherd in about 1863 in Simla and left the firm in 1866 meaning that this portrait can be dated to the years when Lawrence was Viceroy. This is the earliest of the portraits of him which we have come across as  most individual portraits date from after his return to England. He was not raised to the Peerage until he left India. Lawrence [1811-1879] was one of the first Knights of the Order of the Star of India in 1861 when he was Lieutenant Governor of the Punjab and when the Order was enlarged with more grades in 1867 he became GCSI. The card is in excellent clean condition.   apr28/4
