Lt General Sir Ralph Abercromby [1734-1801] A good engraving of 1830

Abercromby [1734 -1801] is shown three bust length in uniform wearing the Order of the Bath  after the painting by Hoppner. The overall size of the sheet is 19½ x 14 ins with wide borders outside the plate marks and the portrait itself is 5 x 4 ins. This very good engraving was published in 1830 by Harding & Lepard, Pall Mall East and would frame attractively. Oct8/1

Sir Robert Abercromby was a Scot from Clackmannan, a county which he twice represented as MP and for which he was later Lord Lieutenant. In 1756 he joined the 3rd Dragoon Guards serving in the Seven Years War. Rising to the rank of Colonel in 1781 he was put in command of the King’s Irish Infantry. After a break on half pay he returned to service wjhen the French declared war in 1793 and two years later he was created KCB and appointed to command aan expedition to the West Indies where he was appointed Lieutenant Governor of the Leeward and Windward Islands, arriving in Barbados in July 1796. After fierce fighting in 1797 he took Trinidad and Tobago. In 1798 he was made Commander in Chief in Ireland. After serving in the Mediterranean in 1891 he led the army at Aboukir and Canope where he was wounded, He died on HMS Foudroyant and was buried on Malta.
