Lt Gore-Steuart of the 74th Highlanders, Gibraltar 1868

£40.00

A hand coloured carte de visite by G DAUTEZ, Photographer to H. R. H. The Duke of EDINBURGH, & & GIBRALTAR showing the young officer in the tropical dress uniform of the 74th Regt of Foot, which became the 2nd Battalion Highland Light Infantry after the 1881 army reforms. He wears tartan trews and white peaked cap with tropical white jacket. The verso identifies the officer in contemporary ink [probably by his parents] as  Alfred, Xmas 1868 but the rest of the attribution added in pencil is mistaken.  This is Alfred William James Gore-Steuart who was commissioned into the regiment 30th October 1867 and is the only Alfred in the regiment at the time. By 1870 the 74th was stationed in Gibraltar attached to the 42nd Black Watch and by 1873 they had moved on to Malta in the same capacity. I believe Gibraltar was the stage on journeys south or east changed into tropical dress. An interesting CDV despite the rather garish hand colouring.  sep18/3
