Madras European Regiment, officer’s early open backed 21mm fine gilt button.

A particularly bright and attractive example of an officer’s 21mm  gilt button of the Madras European Regiment. The button, which is open backed , has the design of the battle honour MAHIDPOOR on a garter around the initials MER beneath a Georgian crown. A wreath of laurel surronds the garter. The button retians virtuallt the full original gilt finish. The construction of this button is very similar to the one of the 10th Madras NI in thsi section. The battle, fought in December 1817, was a convincing victory for the British under General Hislop.   aug21/1
