Leaf one: recto – 2 photographs approx 7½ x 5 ins, one titled Bijapur showing Smith and his wife seated on stone steps and the other titled Poona showing Mrs smith withe a baby and an ayah. The verso has a 9 x 7 ins image of their bungalow 1.A. Elphinstone Road, Poona.
Leaf two: recto – a 9 x 7½ view of David Sassoon Hospital, Poona, Looking from Sisters’ Quarters. verso – 4 photographs showing David Sassoon General Hospital, Poona.
Leaf three – recto – four smaller photographs one with Colonel Smith with another colleague, Surgeon Robert Lyons with their families, The others show unidentified nursing staff and a ward. verso – an 1899 photograph of Killarney, where the Smiths lived in Ireland. nov28/3
Provenance: These leaves came from a broken album which was put together by Surgeon John Blackburn Smith of the Bombay Medical Service who was serving in Baluchistan 1891-93. Photographs from that period can be found elsewhere is this category
