Royal Artillery Album c 1904-10
An oblong folio half leather album [15 x 11 ins] with sixteen leaves with photographs to one side only and a further fifteen with photographs to both sides. Most of the images are mounted 4 to 6 per side but there are some full plate ones too, They begin when the album’s owner annoyingly identified only as J .G.W. was an officer cadet at R.M.A. Woolwich. Two
pages cover a camp in June 1906 at Shoeburyness. Other pages cover: on board the Braemar Castle bound for South Africa, Natal battlefields June 1907, Durban Easter 1907, Trek to Potchefstroom for Practice camp 1907withBattery R.F.A., Vereeniging, Sterkfontein, Heidelberg, N. Lancs.Hounds at Standerton, Shooting Trip at Roberts’ Drift. The last two pages show the regiment in Multan in the Punjab. Almost all the images have a title in ink on the album page and many individuals are named. Although some of these are only initials the tight time frame of the album and the fact that they are all Artillery cadets or junior officers should make it possible to identify most of the sitters, Named people include: 2 Lt. E.C.Hall, V.L.Dolphin, G.J. Strickland, Lt. C.W. Biggs, Capt. Lord A.H, Browne, Maj. Lyle, Capt G.W. Singer, Capt. Smith Rewse, Lt. Thomas, G.A. Hoghton, Parker, Evans, R.S. Adams, Lt. J.S. Westgarth, K.St.E Kirke, Dr Donovan, Maj. Macmillan, Dr. Thatcher, R.J.A., Col. Dawkins, Col. Burton, Maj. Corbyhn, Lord Selborne. There are few large photos which are loose in places where thay were meant to be tipped in and a few additional large group photos including one of mounted officers and ladies on camels in Egypt. jul12/2
