Royal Victorian Medal, Edward VII issue in silver with case of issue

£330.00

The 30mm silver medal has the uniform bust of King Emperor Edward VII on the obverse and the imperial cypher on the reverse. The unusual suspension has a fixed silver Tudor crown to which is attached the swivel ring. The metal brooch for fixing to uniform is lacking but would not be visible anyway. The ribbon is the correct pattern and of the period but is slightly too wide for the box [possibly it is a piece of ribbon intended for a CVO]. This medal was given for very personal services to the monarch or other senior members of the royal family and was awarded to those below the rank of commissioned officer. A lower ranking bronze version also existed. An award entitles the recipient to use the initials R.V.M. after their name. It is still awarded to today after being introduced introduced in 1897,   aug3/2
