Scots Almanack for 1801 with some details of the East India establishment.

£60.00

The Universal Scots Almanack, for the year 1801… dedicated to the Right Hon. Robert Dundas of Arniston, Lord Advocate of Scotland. Printed by Robert Allan of the Caledonian Mercury [Edinburgh] 1801 1st edition 12mo [5¼ x 2¾ ins]

240pp. Contemporary calf boards, the leather worn with some loss of surface to spine and splitting of the leather from the boards beneath but better than usual and a sound working copy. The work contains a calendar and the usual lists including educational establishments, advocates, courts, Scots peers and baronets, church officials, roads through Scotland, stage coaches, English parliament, Army List [officers by regiment], Royal Navy officers listed down to the rank of Captain and a list of ships in commission with names of their commanders, brief East India details, &c. An interesting view of the country and especially Scotland in the first year of the 19th century and during the Napoleonic Wars: Lord Nelson is listed as a Rear Admiral of the Red. The specifically East Indian section is only 5 pages but much of the remainder of the volume is helpful in giving a contemporary picture of those holding office in the Army, Navy, Parliament, Government, and other institutions. Lord Clive was Governor of Madras at the time of publication. jan31/3
