Sir Henry Rawlinson, K.C.B. A fine carte de visite, circa 1860


Lt Colonel Sir Henry Creswicke Rawlinson, K.C.B. [1810-1895]: a fine carte de visite by Maull & Polyblank of Piccadilly, circa 1860. Identified in contemporary pencil on the verso and from a contemporary collection of this company’s cartes de visite of important figures in the 1860s. Rawlinson returned from India in 1856 after serving first in the Bombay Army. He was Political Assistant to Macnaghten at Kabul, Political Agent at Kandahar, before retiring to India with General Nott.  Much archaeological work in Persia followed and he was Consul General at Baghdad. Later he was a Director of the East India Company, a member of India Council, President of the RGS, M.P. for Frome.        sep15/4

The London photographer Maull & Polyblank had studios on Gracechurch Street and on Piccadilly. The firm began trading in around 1856 and continued under this name until 1865 after which it became known as Maull & Co.
