The black metal button with initials S.P.  is attached to a piece of an old piece of sample card from Garden & Son, 200 Piccadilly, London and has the original details of supply to H. S. KING & Co, Oct 1889 in ink to the card. There is no backmark to the button. Garden & Son were a wholesale supplier to the Indian and British Armies. Surat, to the north of Bombay / Mumbai, was one of the first areas of western India to come under European influence, in its case the Portuguese.
