Surgeon H C Miles, in uniform when serving with the Royal Artillery

£120.00

The carte de visite by Ernest Edwards, 20 Baker St, W. shows Surgeon Dr Herbert Chalmers Miles three quarter length in the dress uniform of the Royal Horse Artillery to which he was at various times attached. He wears medals for the Crimean and Indian Mutiny campaigns. The cdv is helpfully accompanied by an old newspaer cutting giving a short obituary including details of his military career as recorded in Hart’s. It is not uncommon at this time for a medical officer to wear the uniform of the regiment to which he was attached, in this case with the rank of captain. Miles was gazetted as an assistant surgeon in 1854, joining the Royal artillery and the following year going with them to the Crimea, In the Indian Mutiny he was serving with the 83rd (County Dublin) Regt [later 1st Bn R Ulster Rifles] 1857-8, severely wounded in the attack on Nindkeira in November 1857. He also served with a wing of the 12th NI and was at the siege and capture of Kotah.            dec28/3
