Well illustrated work on the different types of Sepoy in the Indian Army.

Candler, Edmund: The Sepoy. John Murray [London] 1919 1st edition 8vo.

18 good photo illustrations (of different military types – Jat,Camel Sowar, Meena, Konkani Mahratta, etc), xii.234pp, 2pp publisher’s ads. Original grey cloth with black lettering, an excellent copy, a little occasional foxing,  A fairly basic, but well illustrated, work aimed at introducing potential regimental officers to the soldiers they would command. There are biographical sketches of some 18 different groups from Sikh and Pathan to Santal Labour Corps and Drabi. Although much reproduced in modern editions the original now seems elusive: we last listed one in 2002.    nov5/3
