13th Bombay Native Infantry, dessert dish from the regimental mess

£220.00

An unmarked oval dessert dish, probably for a display of fruit, with  royal blue and gilt border and centred with a regimental badge of the 13th Bombay Native Infantry. The dish measures 11 x 8½ ins [28 x 22 cm] and with its foot stands approx 2 ins high. There is a very small area of the gilt border which may have been chipped at some time and has white restoration [see illustration], no other chips or hair line cracks noted. The badge shows the Sphinx as a battle honour for Egypt above the regimental number XIII in gold on a blue ground within a garter bearing the additional battle honours KIRKEE & BENI-BOO-ALI , the last being an 1821 punitive campaign where the Company’s army served the Sultan of Muscat against warlike tribes.   aug31/3
