14th Regt. of Foot. Officer’s gilt 18mm (

£20.00

An  excellent example of the 18mm gilt button, as worn by officers, with the design of a Bengal tiger above the numeral 14 with the battle honours INDIA above and WATERLOO below. it has the backmark FIRMIN &  SONS 153 STRAND LONDON & 13 CONDUIT  ST.  and retains much of the full original gilt finish. At this time the 14th was The Buckinghamshire, The Prince of Wales’s Own but after 1881 it became The West Yorkshire, Prince of Wales’s Own. This is one of only two numbered buttons to display a tiger indicative of its early India service, the other being the 102nd Royal Madras Fusiliers. jan22/2

Such a full backmark is rather unusual on a small sized button. The tiger is larger and somewhat different from the Jennens example of this button elsewhere in this category.
