1875/6. Portrait of naval officer on H.M.S. Serapis on the Indian tour of H.R.H. The Prince of Wales

£175.00

A signed three quarter length seated portrait of a naval captain measuring 8 x 6½ ins and mounted on a chipped old card. The portrait is rather faded but still very clear and has the great advantage of being signed on the card John Oliver “Serapis” 1875/76 . He wears medals for the Crimean War 1854 [with two claspa] and the 1861 China War and presumably the Turkish Crimean medal. dec23/2

Although we have not done a great deal of research into John Oliver his dating makes it certain that he was on H.M.S. “Serapis”when it was taking H.R.H. The Prince of Wales [later King Edward VII] on his tour of India. We have seen a list of people at a reception in Bombay which lists a Mr Oliver C.I.M. which coukd well be this captain as the initials probably stand for Central Indian Marine.
