19th century decorative buckle, probably a Grand Tour souvenir

£125.00

The buckle measures 43 x 32mm and is made of gilded metal showing the bust of a Greco-Roman warrior or god on a grey hardstone or paste background. It retains its fixing which slots neatly into the right hand side of the buckle. Each part is struck with the initials J D , which may indicate the maker. The number of holes on the reverse for attaching suggest it was designed for quite a wide bracelet – perhaps ropes of pearls or coral. It could equally well be used to fasten a silk choker.
