19th Foot (1st Yorkshire North Riding) A Victorian 1855-1881 brass button 25mm

A 25mm brass button of the 19th Foot, 1st Yorkshire North Riding (Princess of Wales’s Own) as worn by other ranks. The button, which has the backmark   SMITH & WRIGHT BIRMINGHAM is the pattern worn from 1855 to 1881 when its title became 1st & 2nd Bns. The Green Howards (Alexandra, Princess of Wales’s Own Yorkshire Regiment. There  is some degradation of the steel back of the button with the maker’s name. I believe these steel backs were earlier than the more often seen brass ones.   may15/2
